Barnyard Party
Cowpokes of all ages enjoy a barnyard party. So whether you head to the farm or bring the farm to you, this party is sure to be a hit with all ranch hands. Invitations Cut out red barns and add: "It’s time for a hoedown! All cowpokes are invited to help celebrate. Dress up in your best farmer duds and join us down at the barnyard were we’ll rustle up some great food and fun." Decorations Bales of hay can be used as decoration, seating, and tables. If you use them for seats, be sure to put something over them since hay can be quite prickly. A checkered cloth napkin or bandana works well. Use a child’s wagon lined with hay as the gift collection center. Stalks of corn and scarecrows can be placed around the room. Place gourds, vegetables and fruit baskets on tables and counters for that farm feel. Hanging straw hats and bandanas on each chair will add a finishing touch and give your guests something to take home. Food Set out bowls of animal feed for your hungry little farmers (chex mix or pretzel/nut/granola mixture). Serve hotdogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, and beans for the main course. Some simple cake ideas are: cover a cake with brown frosting and crushed chocolate chip cookies and add small tractor and plastic farm animals; form a barn door from a square pan by cutting off part of the top corners, using red frosting and adding white or black piping to outline and create door designs; or cover a cake with white frosting and use black frosting to create patches for a cow cake. Games and Activities Try some of these fun-filled games to keep your farmers occupied:
Apple Bobbing Tie strings around apples and hang them from a broomstick for apple bobbing.
Needle in the Haystack Using fried potato sticks, color one stick red using food coloring (make several for each child). Place the colored sticks in a bowl and fill with regular potato sticks. Whoever gets all their needles from their haystack first wins.
Orchard Scavenger Hunt Hide fruits and/or vegetables around the house/room and give each child a basket. The child who collects the most produce wins. Be sure to keep a count of how many pieces were hidden and collected or you will have a smelly reminder of this game in a few weeks!
Pin the Tail On . . . Pin the tail on the cow, horse, or pig (a large pink circle with a piece of pink curling ribbon for the tail works well).
May I Have This Dance Have a square dance! This party can be held at home and a hugging farm or petting zoo can be hired to bring the animals to you. However, if you’re looking for authenticity, have your party at a farm or ranch for a true barnyard celebration. Favors They may not look like farmers when they arrive, but your guest will certainly resemble them when they leave with these favors: straw hat, bandana, miniature hoe and shovel, and bucket of soil and veggie seed packets.
