Craft Slumber Party

With many different crafts to choose from, your guests will have a great time at a craft sleep over party.  You may want to limit the number of children invited to make sure you have room for everyone to sleep.   Make sure the birthday child and their friends’ are old enough for a sleepover.  If you don’t want to serve dinner, plan on starting the party after 7:00pm.   Making sure everyone understands the house rules at the beginning of the night will make a more enjoyable party for the guests and the adults.

Invitations

Cut sleeping bag shapes out of card stock.  Make a place for a removable paper pillow that can have list all of the details.   Make sure you remind the guests to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, PJ’s, and any personal care items that they will need (i.e. a stuffed animal, tooth paste, tooth brush, hair brush).

Decorations

Streamers, garlands, balloons, and a Happy Birthday sign can be used to decorate the room that the guests will be sleeping in. Arrange their sleeping bags in a circular pattern, so that everyone's heads are facing in towards the center of the circle. This makes it easier for guests to talk and will minimize the problem of who sleeps next to whom.

Food

If the party starts early, you will need to provide dinner.  Offer finger sandwiches and fresh carrots and fruit slices.  You can also have the children to make their own individual pizzas.  Using either English muffins or pre-cooked individual pizza dough set out sauce, cheese, pepperoni or any other topping the children will enjoy.

Make sure you have plenty of snacks to offer throughout the evening.  Set up an ice cream bar so guests can make their own sundae to enjoy with the cake.  (cake recipe) Offer vanilla or chocolate ice cream and various toppings such as flavored syrups, crushed candy or cookies, fresh fruit and whipped cream. Later in the evening, set up a popcorn bar.  After popping the popcorn, offer different topping such as cinnamon and sugar, raisins, mini M&M’s, melted butter, pizza seasoning, and parmesan cheese.

For breakfast set up a buffet which includes cereal, donuts, bagels, fruit, milk and juice.  This will make an easy meal for a tired bunch of people including the parents.

Games & Activities

Following is a list of craft ideas for a sleepover:

Puffy pillows- Decorate plain white pillowcases with puffy paint and fabric markers on one side and have each guest sign the other side.  Don’t’ forget to include the date. Let them dry overnight.

T-shirts – Provide each guest with a white T-shirt.  Since it is a sleepover, make sure they are big enough to use a PJ’s.  Allow the guests to decorate the shirts using  puffy paint, fabric markers or tye-die.  Again, let the guests sign the back.

Cotton Tote Bags - Provide each guest with a white cotton tote bag.  Allow the guests to decorate the bags using puffy paint and fabric markers.

Beaded jewelry – Set up a craft table with various beads, string and wire needed to make bracelets, necklaces and earrings.  The guests can make them for themselves or trade them once everyone has completed this craft.

Toothbrush bracelets - Pull out the bristles from an inexpensive toothbrush and put it in boiling water for a few minutes. When they are warm, pull them out and bend them into bracelets.

Frames – Using pre-cut framed size fun foam, allow each guest to create a frame to remember how much fun they had at this birthday party.  Supply jewels, other fun foam shapes, buttons, sequence and glitter that can be glued to each frame.  Make sure you take a lot of puctures during the party so you can you provide guests a picture in their thank you note to put in their frame.

Bath Bubble Jell

You will need: one packet unflavored Gelatin, 3/4 Cup water, 1/2 Cup clear liquid soap or bubble bath, Fragrance oils, Food Coloring (optional), Plastic jar with lid (e.g. peanut butter jar), Small plastic bath toy, Mixing Bowl, Assorted items to make label

Instructions:

  1. Empty the packet of gelatin into a mixing bowl. Set aside.

  2. With the help of an adult, warm water until it begins to boil. Immediately remove water from heat source. Carefully pour the hot water into mixing bowl and gently mix with gelatin powder. Allow gelatin to completely dissolve. Be patient! This may take a few minutes.

  3. Slowly and gently stir in the liquid soap to the gelatin mixture. Add a drop of food coloring and 5-8 drops of fragrance oil. (Be careful not to beat mixture or bath jell will become foamy.)

  4. Pour your potion into a clean, clear container. Place a small toy inside jar as a treat!

  5. Refrigerate Bubble Jelly until set (about 4 hours). As the jelly sets, come up with a name for your creation! Then using scraps of stiff paper and ribbon, make a fun label for the jar. Attach label to bath jell jar by punching a hole in one corner of the label. Thread ribbon, cut long enough to tie around the jar, through hole on label. Tie around the jar!

  6. To use, scoop a small amount of jell into your hand and hold under warm running water for a bubbly bath-time treat!
