First Birthday Parties

Invitations

Simple invitations asking guests to help celebrate a first birthday work fine.  There are many variations of the first birthday invitation available so you are sure to find one that fits your child's personality.

* Remember to ask a parent to stay with their little guest for the duration of the party.

Decorations

A colorful table cloth to cover the table, shaped plates and balloons, balloons, balloons!  Make sure to get the "silver" helium-filled kind. Latex balloons are a choking hazard to kids under the age of 4.   Make a centerpiece with a balloon bouquet and a big #1 or just let the balloons float to the ceiling. For a special touch, give a box of animal crackers to every child, attach a balloon to each one and place at their table setting.   Make or buy a bright, creative cake and be sure to take pictures of your child with the cake before the guest arrive and the excitement begins.  Set out photo albums and photos of the birthday child.

Food

Since eating habits and abilities at this age may vary, have finger food snacks available like individual boxes of raisins, cheerios, and goldfish.

Fresh fruit will always be a hit, but make sure the fruit is cut into small pieces.

Games and Activities

Games and activities don't have to be structured for this group.  Young children will do better with short interactive activities.  Put on some age appropriate music and let the kids sing and clap along to simple songs.

A roll of butcher block paper and some big crayons will be a hit. Roll the paper out on the floor or a long table and tape down the edges. Spread crayons around and let the kids go at it!

Easy games like ring-around-the-rosie and "simon sez" will be fun for this age group too.  If you have room outside in a secure area, blow bubbles for kids to chase and pop.

(Be sure to plan a few activities if siblings or older children are invited)

Favors

Little ones will love a box of animal crackers as a party favor.   Shovels and pails, small books and balls are also great treats and a great way to  thank your guests for coming.
