Valentine's Day Party
HUGS,
KISSES, CANDY and FLOWERS . . . what’s there not to LOVE about this
holiday! Kids of all ages
may blush and giggle when you mention the “L” word, but whether
they’ll admit it or not, they all think Valentine’s Day is
special. Invitations
Cut
outs of hearts in assorted colors make perfect invitations. Write in it: “To
someone special. I truly
hope that you can join me for a Valentine’s Day celebration. “
Then tie/tape the invitation to a box of candy hearts or a
chocolate kiss and give it to the special someone.
Decorations
Pink,
red and white are obviously the primary colors for decorations.
But don’t hesitate to make this occasion extra special with
splashes of gold, silver, and glitter.
Decorate the room with lots of balloons and streamers.
Hang plenty strands of shiny curling ribbon from lamps (avoid
the bulb area), doorknobs, chair backs, etc.
Cut outs of hearts in different sizes and colors can be strewn
on the floor and tabletops come alive with a thin layer of confetti.
Check with party stores for a great assortment of streamers,
festive garland, table clothes, and more.
If you prefer to make your own, a white tablecloth is easily
decorated with red stamped hearts and cute sayings like “Kiss Me, Be
Mine, Love, Hugs, Kisses,” etc. (use fabric markers). Food
A
heart shaped cake is easy to make and looks festive when surrounded by
cupcakes. The center cake
can be one color while the surrounding cupcakes can be frosted in an
accent color and decorated with sprinkles.
You will end up with a scalloped-edged masterpiece! With
the help of cookie cutters, ordinary foods can be adapted to this
theme. Small cutters can be used to cut out pieces of cheese, dried
fruit rolls-ups, and sliced apples.
Larger cutters are great for producing heart-shaped sandwiches
or mini-pizzas. You can also decorate a simple cheese pizza by adding heart
shaped pepperoni as a topping. Everyone
enjoys ice cream. This
treat becomes even more special when topped with hearts and chocolate!
Give everyone his/her own bowl (red or pink) filled with a
scoop of ice cream. Now
send them to the toppings table where stations have been set up so
they can decorate their edible masterpiece.
Provide lots of red toppings such as cherries, M & M’s,
sprinkles (look for Valentine themed ones), and strawberry syrup.
Be sure to also offer chocolate syrup, fresh strawberries, and
whipped cream for a fantastic finish.
No
Valentine’s Day celebration is complete without the candy.
Bowls of red and pink M & M’s become a bit healthier if
mixed with a crunchy cereal, peanuts, and pretzels.
For
older guests, Chocolate Fondue can be a big hit.
Set up a large bowl or fondue pot of melted chocolate (you can
even have multiple flavors like milk, dark and white).
Offer an assortment of items that can be dipped such as mini
cup cakes, marshmallows, fruits (apples, bananas, pineapples,
strawberries), and cheesecake pieces.
Then let the dipping begin!
You’ll want to have plenty of napkins on hand for this treat! Offer
a filling and healthy snack with bagels.
Cut each bagel in several pieces so short fingers can easily
handle them. Set out
containers of yummy cream cheese flavors like strawberry, blueberry,
and honey-maple. Serve
all on a large platter surrounded by fresh fruit and a side of
chocolate milk! A
sweet beverage to complement any Valentine’s Day party food is pink
lemonade. Jazz things up
a bit by adding a scoop of strawberry or pink sherbert ice cream! Games
and Activities
Love
Bug Search Purchase
several plastic ladybugs (love bugs) from a party store or nature
store and hide them around the room.
Have the kids collect them and place them in decorative paper
cups. The person with the
most love bugs gets a hug and a kiss (chocolate)! Make
and Take Valentine
Provide
each child with a large card stock grade blank card. Set out an assortment of markers and crayons (have plenty of
reds and pinks), glue, glitter, doilies, stamps (hearts, flowers,
lips, etc.), and ribbons. Let
each child decorate a card for his/her special someone.
Valentine
Bingo
Use
cards that have squares with words like “love, heart, hug, kiss,
etc.”. Give each child
a hand full of chocolate kisses to cover the words.
This is a fun a tasty way to play Bingo! A
Pot of Love
Provide
everyone with a clay flowerpot and lots of items with which to
decorate it (markers, paint, glitter, ribbon, etc.).
Fill the inside of the pot with a piece of florist’s foam.
Using fun foam (check your craft store), cut out several pink
and red hearts of various sizes. Using white, cut out another heart that is larger than the
rest. On the white heart,
glue on a picture of each child’s face and decorate the edge with
glitter. The smaller
hearts can also be decorated and written on with makers (words like
“I Love You, You’re Special,” etc.).
Cut out several leaves from green fun foam.
Now attach hearts and leaves to a florist stake using a glue
gun (adult’s job). The
hearts become the flowers and the leaves should be glued on no lower
than ¾ of the way down the stem.
Finally, insert the stems into the floral foam in the pot and
tie a ribbon around the entire pot.
The pots of love are now ready to be delivered to someone
special with a big hug! Heart
Pencil Toppers
Have
each child cut two hearts out of colored (red and pink) construction
paper. Hearts can be
decorated with glitter, markers, lace, and stamps.
Now glue the edges of the hearts together, leaving a small
opening at the bottom point of the hearts.
Run a bead of glue around each side of the opening and slide
the hearts over the eraser end of a pencil (be sure to purchase some
special pencils for this occasion).
Once dry, guests can use their pencils and really put their
hearts into their homework! Find
your "Heartner" Valentine
Boxes
Ask
the guests to bring a valentine for each other. Provide enough
shoe boxes for each guest to make a special valentine box holder.
Cut a whole in the box top big enough to place valentine cards and
candy inside. Provide stickers, crayons, markets, lace doilies,
fun foam hearts, jewels, and Cray paper for each person to decorate
the box. When they are complete, let each guest place their
cards in each box. Estimation
Jar
Fill
several jars (many plastic valentine shaped jars are available now)
with candy such as red, pink & white M&M's, cinnamon red hots,
and conversation hearts. Count how many pieces are in each jar.
Allow guests to guess how many are in each. The guest closest to
the correct number wins the jar. Valentine
Pictionary or Charades
Divide
the group into two smaller groups. Write valentine words,
phrases, movies, and songs on different pieces of paper. Have
one person start from one team and ether act out or draw the word they
selected. Everyone can guess the word. The team that
is correct gets a point then gets to either act out or draw
the next word. When all the words are gone, the team with the
most points wins. Musical
Chairs or Freeze Dance Using romantic, love, or
valentine songs, play either musical chairs or freeze dance.
When the music stops find a chair or freeze. Valentine
Relay
Divide
the group into two teams. Cut out valentine hearts from
construction paper. Put the same action on two hearts (such
as hop, skip, hop on two feet, walk backwards, walk sideways, how with
one eye closed, walk with both hands in the air, hop and shake one
hand, hop-skip-hop-skip..., pretend to roller blade, walk in
circles) and continue making enough for each team. Place the
guests on one side of the room in a single file line and the hearts on
another side. On go, have the first guest walk down and
pick up the heart then do the action on the way back to the line.
They touch the head of the next person in line then sits down.
The next guest repeats this until everyone has had a chance. The
first team complete wins. Cake
Walk
Cut large hearts out of
construction paper (large enough to stand on) and number them 1-how
ever many people will participate. Have the same numbers written
down on individual pieces of paper in a bowl or hat. Arrange the
hearts in a circle. Have each guest stand on a heart.
Start the music. When the music stops each guest should be on a
heart. Pull a number out of the bowl. The person standing
on the number takes their heart and picks out a bakery prize (even
just one cookie or a dozen to take home). Continue until all
numbers have been called. Everyone is a winner! Heart
People
Cut
out hearts (one per guest) about 5 inches tall and strips of paper (4
per guest) about 1 inch wide by 5 inches tall. Provide markers,
google eyes, sequence, makers, and yarn. Decorate the heart like
a face. Take the paper and fold it like an accordion. Tape
or glue it to the sides of the heart (like arms) and the back of the
heart (like legs). Make sure to write the guests names on the
back of each. Valentine
Coupons
This
is a great gift for the children to make for their parents.
Provide a least 5 pieces of white paper (cut into small rectangles)
per guest and two pieces of construction paper (red or pink) per
guest. Have them write love coupons on each piece of paper good
for one free jug, one free kiss, feeding the dog, vacuuming, doing the
dishes, not fighting with their sibling... Hole punch all the
paper and tie it together with yarn. This can be used all year. Heart WreathThis
is a cute way to decorate any room.
Cut out hearts in various sizes and colors.
Using a paper plate that has the center cut out, glue the
hearts around the plate to form a wreath.
Complete the wreath with glitter, beads, ribbons or jewels for
accents. Add a string
hanger and your decoration is ready for the front door.
CAUTION: If your
door gets wet when it rains you may end up with a soggy wreath and
colors streaming down your door – choose your decoration location
carefully. Favors
Using
plain white lunch bags, stamps with red hearts, write each guests name
in calligraphy and fill with goodies.
For the girls, include glittery body lotion, lip-gloss,
strawberry flavored lip balm, cherry scented bath beads, bead
necklaces, and, of course, candy!
For the boys, it is easier to focus on a color like red.
Fill the bag with toy cars, pens, stickers, tattoos, and candy.
Another fun option is to give each guest his/her own “sundae
bar”. Everyone receives
an assortment of sprinkles, a jar of cherries, a bottle of chocolate
ice cream syrup, a cute bowl and spoon, and a coupon for an ice cream
cup from your local ice cream parlor or fast food restaurant. Resources
