Western Party

Back to Birthday Party Themes

Invitations

"Howdy Pardners. We're havin' a Hoedown to celebrate _____'s Birthday.  Please join us for some western fun"

When inviting your guests, let them know that they’ll need to wear  western attire.

As guests arrive, give each a straw cowboy hat, bandana, and/or sheriff's star and deputize them as official deputy party goers.

Decorations

Use a  white and red checkered table cloth. An western boot for a centerpiece with balloons coming out of the top is a nice touch. A birthday banner that says "Welcome to ______ Corral".  Make cardboard catus'.  A Wanted Sign with your child's photograph.  A couple bales of hay are a wonderful addition to this theme.   Tin pie pans for snacks.

Food

Serve bar-b-que beans, roasted hot dogs and chips in tin pie plates.  Mugs of root beer, root beer in bottles or lemonade served in old-time glass jars are a nice touch.

Games and Activities

Horse shoes

If your yard has enough space, this game will sure to be a hit. Purchase plastic horseshoes and place the stakes close enough together to not frustrate the younger guests.

Pin the badge on the sheriff

Played like pin the tail on the donkey but give each child a plastic sheriff's badge and have him write his/her name on it.

Make cowboy vests from paper bags

Cut out a vest for each child ahead of time from supermarket paper bags.  Have the guest decorate their vests with markers, stamps and stencils.

Pan for gold

Before the party, paint some common backyard rocks gold.  Purchase some inexpensive gem stones and beads.  Fill a small child's pool with water, a bag of sandbox sand and the "treasure".  Give each child a pie pans with small holes pre-punched in them (Use a nail to hammer holes into the bottom).  Have the little pioneers start panning!

Rope the pony

Using a lasso made from hoola hoop and some twine, have the children try to lasso a stick that has been firmly tapped into the ground.

Musical chairs to country music is an old standby that will sure to please.

Favors

harmonicas, gold chocolate coins, bandanas, rubber snakes
