TEEN BEDROOMS

Children seem to disappear into their bedrooms around age 12 don't typically reappear again until they are 18. They crave privacy and their own space. They want their bedrooms to express themselves, where comfort and coziness are priorities.

Although teens may want different types of themes, consider the following when converting that “little kids” room to a haven for your young adult.

·      Since teens tend to want different looks often, use paint to cover the walls.  Paint will allow your teen to make a statement inexpensively.   Try using a lighter and darker shade of a favorite color for a new look.  Reversible fabrics for the bedding, window treatments and other bedroom accessories give teens the option of two or more styles to mix and match.

·      Allow your teen to display what is important to them. Many stores sell corkboard in various sizes that can easily added to any room. Create an area on a wall that will allow them to hang the posters, magazine pictures and photos of friends and family that have meaning to them.

·      Where to put all the clothes, CDs, personal mementos, collections, books, grooming products, etc?  Teens have a lot of stuff that's important to them, and need more room to hold it all.  Consider adding built-in shelving, cabinets, and other storage places.  Providing the maximum amount of storage the room will allow will help cut down on the clutter.

·     The bedroom is a favorite place for most teens to do their homework. If your teen prefers to do homework on the bed how about a husband pillow in colors that coordinate with the room?  This large pillow with arms is great to sit up against.  If they want to do homework on a desk, make sure there is plenty of desk space to spread out and the chair is comfortable for hours of homework.   Regardless of the location in the room, make sure there is sufficient lighting near.

·     Don’t forget to add a comfy place to relax, read or entertain friends. Beanbag chairs, an inexpensive, undersized, foam-rubber foldout sofa, or even the newer inflatable furniture are great choices.  Director's chairs can easily be customized with fabrics that coordinate with the room and work well for the growing child whose tastes might change quickly.

·     Many fun teen specific accessories are available.  Don’t forget a fun new phone, a cool looking boom box, and new colored lamps to finish the room.

·     One last tip for those teens that seem to want a new look each month, a simple task such as rearranging some or all of the furniture can create a new look without spending any money.  And it may make them clean under the bed.

Remember that your teen will be spending the majority of the time in this room.  Make sure you have their input.  Let them help pick out the colors and the accessories.  Good luck and have fun!
