GARDEN Whether entertaining
friends with her tea set or daydreaming on her fluffy bed, your daughter will
think she’s living in her own secret garden in this special room. Walls:Your child will feel
special in a room where the skies are always blue and the sun is
constantly shining. Using
your favorite shade of blue, paint the walls.
Then add a sun on a wall or even the ceiling.
If you feel like adding some fair-weather clouds, dip a sea
sponge in a palate of assorted blues and white paint and start dabbing.
Decorate the walls with painted or stenciled flowers but
don’t’ forget to add the little details – raindrops, butterflies,
caterpillars, and ladybugs. Add
an accent by drawing a fake post on the wall and mounting a flat
birdhouse at the top (purchase a wooden birdhouse and saw it in half). If you find yourself with another blank wall, mount two
wooden dowels to the wall and attach a string to the top of each one to
create a clothesline, then use it hang artwork or cards with
clothespins. No garden is
complete without a picket fence. Purchase
a ready-made fence and mount it directly onto the wall with a nail gun.
You can surround the entire room or just pick an accent wall.
Then decorate the fence with silk flowers and vine garland.
Accessories:Every garden needs
flowers. Purchase some
baskets and/or flowerboxes (you can even paint them) and fill with silk
flowers. Then mount them in
front of windows or even at the top of a simple headboard. Add more flowers by hanging silk or dried bunches in the
corners of the ceiling. And if you want to
give your garden a mystical feel, add little fairies!
You can often find delicate fairies in Christmas supply shops
(check by the ornaments). Tie them to some fishing line and hang them from the ceiling
around the room. This same
idea can also be used for butterflies! A corner is a
perfect place for a small round table set with a little tea set.
Be sure to use a lace-trimmed table cloth and add doilies under
plates, white gloves to the backs of chairs and a bouquet of tea roses
as a centerpiece to complete the setting.
Bedding: Both
the bed and window treatments should reflect the tranquility of a
garden. Pastel colors are
good for solid material. Try
using delicate prints of dots, thin stripes or checks to give the room a
whimsy feel. Adding lace trim to pillow shams, dust ruffles and curtains
will give the room some softness. Window
Treatment and Shelving: Window
treatments in this lovely room should coordinate with the bedding.
Mixing and matching polka dots and stripes or plaid can give the
room a whimsical feel. Try
draping soft, sheer fabrics over a curtain rod for a breezy look.
Artwork: Pictures of roses,
peonies, lavender and other flowers are perfect for this garden room.
Place all pictures in matching frames and hang them in a group of
four (two side-by-side) on one wall for a distinct look.
In General: This room can appeal
to young ladies of all ages. Soothing,
calm, and relaxing – you’ll find yourself expecting the Queen to
arrive for afternoon tea in this room!
