OLD WEST

Your little cowboy will saddle-up in a hurry in his own dude ranch.

Walls:

Neutral walls make a nice background for colorful wallpaper boarders with scenes of horses, spurs, and wagons.  Add a little spice to the scene by painting shutters on both side of the window to mimic a barn door.  Don’t forget to add glow-in-the-dark stars for the ceiling – cowpokes like to roll out their bedrolls and sleep under the stars.

Accessories:

Accessories like cowboy hats, spurs, and chaps can be distributed around the room to give things that western feel.  Look for some of these things at Halloween time or Halloween suppliers such as Oriental Trading Company.  Also check with local feed stores for additional decorating items.

Bedding:

A neutral comforter makes a great replica of a cowboy bedroll.  But if you want to enhance the décor with theme bedding, check places like Domestications for a good selection.

Window Treatment and Shelving:

Rustic wooden boards make shelves look like they were taken right from the barn.  But be careful to use wood that doesn’t have rough edges and splinters.  You can also try using a soft wood such as pine and wood burn designs on the edges of boards. If you come across some horseshoes, nail them on to an old board (pointing up and hanging off the edge of the board by 2 inches) to use as a hat or coat rack.

For quick window treatments, drape bandanas over a wooden curtain rod (corner to corner).

 Artwork:

If you’re looking for color, pictures of horses in wooden frames are a nice way to dress up the walls.  For that authentic western feel, copy some black and white photos from old west books and then place them in wooden frames onto which you’ve glued heavy rope for trim.  Personalize the room with your child’s very own “Wanted” poster by blowing up a picture of your child’s face and having it copied onto a iron-on sheet.  Next, iron your child’s face onto a canvas with frayed edges.  Now add appropriate wording with marker: “Child’s Name Wanted for ….  $1000 reward”

In General:

This room can be given lots of character with old boots, hats, wooden toy chests and such so look around in used goods stores and garage sales.  Many accessories can be found at toy stores or even in ring/farm supply catalogs.  Have fun with this theme.  Your child will give you a big “yeehaw” for it!
