Back to Kids Rooms Themes and Ideas

SPORTS

For this theme you can decorate around one particular sport or team, or create your own sports hall of fame.  Used sports equipment makes great accessories and is often found at garage sales, second-hand stores, and used-sporting goods stores.  This room will be a big hit with your little slugger.

Walls:

Depending on if your sport takes place in the sky or on the ground, walls can be painted grass-green or sky- blue.  If you are planning to focus on a particular team, use the team colors to inspire the wall colors.  If you’re feeling particularly creative, paint a baseball diamond, basketball court or soccer field on a wall.  Another idea is to use blackboard paint to create a “scoreboard” on a wall for drawing game plays or use magnetic paint to create a “scoreboard” on a wall to keep messages.

Accessories:

Used sports gear is easy to find and can add a finishing touch to your sports room.  Hang old cleats, skates or blades from corners of pictures and posters or over curtain rods.  Use golf balls, tennis balls or baseballs a curtain rods ends and lamp finials.  Mount Surfboards behind the bed for instant headboards.

Bedding:

An easy way to instantly go from boring to bold is to purchase a bed-in-a-bag.  This all-in-one kit usually consists of a comforter, sheets, shams, and bed skirt.  Everything is color/pattern coordinated for quick and easy transformations.  Finish the look with large, bold accent pillows that can double as floor pillows.  In addition, many bedding suppliers have a good assortment of ball-shaped pillows such as baseballs, footballs, and basketballs.

Window Treatment and Shelving:

Check your local fabric store for some great sports patterns to use for curtains.  If sewing is not your thing, buy sheets in your color or pattern and use them as curtain material.  Sheets are already hemmed and come in various sizes to accommodate many window sizes.  Visit Domestications for some fun prints.

Shelving in sports rooms allow a lot of creativity.  Keep an eye out for inexpensive skateboards, surfboards, wakeboards, etc to use as shelves.

 Artwork:

Posters are a great way to cover blank walls while adding lots of color.  Take your child’s team or individual sports photo and have it blown up to poster size for a personalized look.  Add emphasis to special pictures by framing them with baseball bats.

In General:

Keeping a kid’s room neat and organized can be a challenge, so why not make cleaning up fun?  Keep the clothes hamper by a wall and hang a basketball hoop and net directly above it.  Your little sports fan can slam-dunk the laundry into the hamper.  Old footlockers or locker room lockers make cool accessories while providing storage space.  Provide additional storage by sewing up the legs of basketball shorts and hanging the shorts on the wall to serve as a storage bag.  With a room like this, your child will expect to hear cheering fans every time he/she enters the room.
